I have a bad habit of buying consoles when they are first released. Don't get me wrong, having a shiny new system on release day is great, but I always end up kicking myself when they release the special "themed" edition later on. I bought the 3DS on launch day, and cursed my own name when they had the Legend of Zelda versions for black Friday later that year, not to mention the drastic price drop... With the 3DS XL, I told myself, "Not this time!". The plan was to wait for a Pokemon or Zelda themed unit before I pulled the trigger. When I saw the Pokemon tweet announcing that this 3ds was headed stateside I was very excited. When I found out Target would have it on sale at launch for forty bucks under retail, I was beside myself. Needless to say I was outside my Target on the 24th waiting for them to open the doors.Right off the bat, I can tell you that even without the Pikachu branding, the XL is a very worthy upgrade from the standard 3DS. The whole unit just feels more solid. The buttons have a satisfying "click" to them, more so than the standard 3DS. The labeling on the buttons and the overall texture of them feel much more rugged. The buttons all have a nice "weight" to them. The Start/Select/Home bar under the bottom screen is no longer just a pad, each button is a molded plastic button, firmly in its place. The shoulder buttons are the biggest button improvement after the start/select/home. They are raised and are set firmly in the console.The finish is matte with a nice texture. This isn't a fingerprint magnet like the standard DS. The volume is a slider, not the up/down rocker on the standard. I like this because it lets me know where I'm at within the volume range. Sound is great overall, the speakers don't get SUPER loud, but it's significantly improved over the standard version. Everything else is essentially the same as it was on the standard, just on a larger console except for the screens...The screens! This is what makes this unit worth every penny. Just a little background, I've owned each DS as they've been released. I've spent many hours staring at each iteration of screen. Those of you with similar experience will remember the transition from the DSi to the DSi XL. Although it was great to see your games on the giant screen for the first time ever, there was noticeable loss of quality. I don't feel this is the case with the 3DS XL. Let me put it this way: DS games felt like they were made for the original DS and scaled up to fit the XL, 3DS games feel like they were made for the 3DS XL and scaled down for the 3DS. I notice details in Etrian Odyssey IV that I hadn't previously noticed. I feel that overall I am able to appreciate the artwork, detail and design of the 3DS games better with the 3DS XL. The 3D effect is a vast improvement. As expected with the larger screen the "sweet spot" is much larger for viewing 3D than on the standard version. My wife always commented that she couldn't understand how I could look at the 3ds when I was playing. I had her play a little of Luigi's Mansion on the new XL and she said, "NOW I get the appeal." It's much easier on the eyes and the 3D effect is just better overall.In regards to the Pikachu design, it's definitely well done. It's a high quality design on a matte 3DS XL. It's VERY yellow. I really like the white on the inside of the unit, it looks clean and overall it was a very nice choice. Having it in my hands, with the overall texture of the unit, I don't have any concern that the image will wear off. Obviously if you're very hard on your system or the outer shell were to experience a lot of friction you might run into problems, but I wouldn't worry too much about the image wearing through standard use.Included items are: User Manual, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon ad, Warranty information and Club Nintendo Code, AR Cards (same as standard 3DS), Charging Cable (No dock for XL), 1 White Stylus (no spares), 4GB SD Card (already in the system).There are a couple things I'm disappointed about. First, in regards to the XL in general, I'm a bit frustrated at the absence of a second analog stick. I think this is something that should be standard on systems using games that are controlled in 3D space. They added the circle pad pro to the standard 3DS, but I doubt they're going to release a giant CPP for the XL. I would have thought that they could've included something with the extra room available on the face of the larger system. NOT a deal breaker, just an annoyance. Second, I expected something else Pokemon themed to be included, a stylus or screen cleaning cloth or maybe a special Pokemon AR card included in the pack, or perhaps a pokemon strap to attach to the system. Again, not a deal breaker, it just would've been nice to have a little something extra.Overall, I am thrilled with the XL. If you're on the fence, I can tell you, it is worth it to upgrade. With some of the major retailers running really good sales on these systems this week, now is definitely a good time to take the plunge and make the upgrade!

I have this console, actually, and I love it. It doesn't hurt that I've downloaded the free app for netflix and then hooked up my account, of course. So it's awesome for me. To be honest, it's just an oversized 3ds with pikachu plastered on the front, but if you want it, you'll go get it. I got this from a nearby Walmart (Dillon, SC) for the market price of $200, and the other two are still left over, for the same price. So if you actually want it for a hundred dollars cheaper and you live close enough--heads up!Just trying to help you avoid the extra fee.By the way, if you buy one of these and you want a game to go with, I recommend either the new Pokemon Mystery Dungeon or the new Luigi's Mansion thing. If you get one of those, you can register them on club nintendo and get a choice of 5 pretty good games. Not the cheap ones, either.

This is a the best Limited Edition 3DS that North America has seen this far! It is a 3DS XL which is the new norm for handhelds and it is Pikachu! Who could ask for more?!Ignore the bad reviews due to price. Mine was bought at Target and was informed that each store got only THREE of these! TALK ABOUT LIMITED QUANTITIES! Also, Amazon doesn't sell the Nintendo 3DS because they and Nintendo haven't seen eye to eye since the launch of the original 3DS.Plus for anyone who is on the fence about the 3DS, it is absolutely beautiful! The graphics are mind blowing and the picture quality is comparable to HD home consoles. It has an amazing library of games and is definitely worth the investment!
