5Great Game!
By icomputered
This is my first Ace Combat game owned, and I have to say, its really good! First of all, the game is just beautiful. The different scenery tied with the light of the sun looks amazing in 3D, My only issue is that the ground, and some of the buildings, look pretty plain and boring. But the oceans and the mountains look amazing! The controls of this game are pretty easy to figure out. Some planes are easier to fly then others, but all in all I have never really had a problem. One thing I really love about this game is the sound effects. The music is nice, but I prefer to keep it off because of how cool the planes sound. One of my favorite parts of this game, however, is at the end of this mission you can watch a replay of the mission from different angles, and if you like the replay you can save it and watch it later. This game doesn't really have much of a story, but basically you are a pilot who goes by Phoenix. You receive commands and go on missions, and occasionally you have a partner (who is a CPU) join you (The nice thing is that you can choose from a few CPU's your partner). Throughout the missions, your commander and partners tell you what to do and where to go, or you can just follow the arrow. Before each mission, you can customize your plane using money you earned in other missions(like what weapons you want, what you want the paint to look like, etc.)as well as customize the plane your partner. After you complete a mission, you can replay it.As you can see, this game gives you a lot of choices, but some are not always good. Sometimes, during the game, your commander lets you choose what mission you want to do next. The problem is, with the mission that you don't pick, you can't ever play it unless you replay story mode, which is annoying. All in all, this game is a great game, and I would recommend it to anyone!

4Awesome, but a bit short
By Yu-jin Chia
Straight up, this is a darn good game. It is really easy to pick up and play, has great graphics and sound (the soundtrack is especially good) and is very exciting. I can't speak for previous entries in the series because I didn't play any of them, but I really enjoyed this one. It does a great job of making you feel like a fighter jock in a high-intensity conflict, without getting into too much simulator details. Not that I don't like flight simulators, but there's a place for that- and it's not on a console. On that note, this is also an arcade/action game. You can go to cockpit view, but aside from the altimeter none of the instruments is of actual use. You basically have two things to worry about- not flying into the ground, and shooting enemies. Those enemies can be on the ground, sea, or air, and run a wide range of vehicles with differing abilities. There's enough variety in units (both playable and not) and customization to make the game fun and offer some replay value.Controls are very simple- no rolling, only pitch and yaw. You have a cannon that auto-targets within short range and missiles, which auto-lock. You have afterburners and brakes, and if you remain within dogfight range of an enemy long enough you can execute offensive maneuvers. If you have a missile shot at you, you can also execute defensive moves (though this takes pretty quick reaction). If you wish, you can have a wingman tag along, though they cost credits to deploy and aren't very useful aside from presenting the enemy with another target. If you do get blown away, you either have to restart the level from scratch or- if there was a checkpoint- start again from the checkpoint. Either way you start at full health and ammo, so in some of the longer and harder missions this is often your way out. Some of the missions are quite difficult (especially on harder settings) but mainly due to the sheer number of enemies rather than any AI or skill required. For the most part, you can only take two missile hits before going down, so in a furball where you're outnumbered 5-6 to one it can get a bit dicey. It pays to use offensive maneuvering as much as possible then. There are enough aircraft, weapons, upgrades, and skins to unlock that you'll probably keep playing after finishing the campaign the first time. That said, it is short. Really darn short- the campaign is probably 5 hours of playtime, and after you finish it there's only a few bonus missions and survival missions- which are essentially the same as the campaign levels. The two other modes are survival (which you have to watch time and repair your aircraft) and campaign replay (which is basically campaign levels, in any order and with any difficulty). There is no multiplayer, which is a bit of a bummer seeing as how this game seems to just beg for it.One playthrough in the campaign will unlock maybe 1/3 of the jets and half the upgrades. Playing it through again on harder difficulty unlocks most of the rest. This is kind of frustrating because you simply won't get the coolest planes unless you play through the whole campaign at least twice. And after that, you probably won't be able to afford them all, so you'll have to sell old ones or pick and choose. It's kind of a bummer, too, that you'll never be able to show off your new wings to anyone else. There's unlockable medals but the lack of any network play makes most of the customization and unlockables pretty meaningless. If you beat the game on ace difficulty, there's really no reason to play it through again, as the better jets just make it easier. The only real reason is to see them in action, which is eye candy and sometimes unique special weapons, but you'd be playing the same levels all over again. There are some branching mission choices, but you can do them all in two playthroughs.Despite its brevity, this game is fun enough (and frankly, cheap enough) that I have to recommend it. It's one of the better action titles I've seen so far for the 3DS, and is a lot of fun for any modern combat fan or people that appreciate the series.

4Pleaseantly Surprised!
By Insomniak
I had always loved the Ace Combat Series on since the original on PSX. Having tried the Ace Combat Joint Assault on the PSP, I was left disappointed. I have been on the fence about this game for several reasons. First: I think AC looks best on the big screen. Second: Controls are usually difficult on mobile (think iOS) making the game frustrating. Last: I am not overly sold on the 3D aspect. Well, I am happy to report that, for the most part, it has met my expectations on all these points. The graphics are very well done, although it may need more detail, especially on the ground. Controls are a bit difficult to get used to, especially when looking up and down the two screens. Also, it needs to be a bit more responsive. But once you get used to it, it becomes a non-issue. As far as the 3D effects, they are very well done. It provides a level of depth that is impressive. Unfortunately, it is only visible when approaching the ground or when you find the "sweet spot" for viewing and not moving so much. I must mention that the sound is incredible. On headsets, the positional queues are very well done. The voice overs are competent and keep the action going, providing a fuller experience. The music is ok, but I found myself muting it most of the time for a more "realistic" sensation. Overall, I think this a great tittle for the 3DS and lots of fun. At the price that it is now, you could not go wrong.
