5A clarifying review for those on the fence about the CTA Digital Deluxe Power Grip for the 3DS
By Nick Olson
There is A LOT of commentary in the reviews about wobbliness and imperfect connections between the grip and the 3DS so, having taken the plunge and gambled my money on one of these bad boys. I thought I would take the time to clarify a few things that managed to go unsaid so far or emphasize the quality of some of the products features.1) This Product, 3ds securely plugged in, weighs slightly more than an Xbox 360 controller, and measures no more than half an in wider or taller than the standard 360 controller. So if that is the feel you are hoping to replicate, this is the best you will get in the weight and size departments and I have to say, it is pretty spot on.2) If you have a functioning-as-intended unit, there is no detectable wobbliness between the 3DS and the grip. If your unit is not defective, your connection is secure and wobble-free, so to any reviews that discourage this because of their experience with a defective unit, remember that they were in fact, experiencing a defective unit. It was said that Amazon might have had a bogus supply of this product by one reviewer but I am here to tell you I bought mine from Amazon after that review was already up and mine works great so rest assured, whatever was going on appears to be under control in that regard.3) Doubling battery life is an understatement. I will admit, I keep my 3DS and grip pretty well charged in general, but when it is off the cord and the 3DS starts blinking at me, I flick the grip's power switch on up on top of the unit and I just bought myself no less than double the play time I had without the additional battery.4) There is one thing I will say in suggestion for the next model. This to me is the V2 model of the $9.99 basic CTA hand grip with the stand and SD card slot built into said stand. It appears that CTA listened to consumer's pleas to change that SD slot to a game card slot, which I thought was great addition in design. In reality though, the stand is too short to securely grasp the grip with both hands and keep it flat on a tabletop or surface. The area you snap your 2nd game into to store for later is exceptionally difficult to work with, and once I jammed a game all the way in there it didn't want to give it back without a fight. The locking mechanism that clips the stand flat against the grip when not in use to keep it from dangling during play with games that don't require it is also pretty shoddy. It took a bit of effort to keep it shut and since then I've simply opted not to use it. Honestly though, I don't care for stands as a means to improve game play experiences anyway. But maybe in the V3 Model either lengthen and/or reinforce the stand by getting rid of or improving the quality and design of it to the same standard as the rest of the unit was built. That said, #4 made less than no negative impact on my play experience with the Grip, it just served no real purpose. Furthermore, as a 6'2" 22 yr old male, I wasn't built with little hands so this grip is a life saver in the realm of hand cramp prevention. The ONLY games I don't use this with are Resident Evil: Revelations and Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D and that is because both games' camera controls go from baffling perplexity to pleasant stroll in the park when used with Nintendo's Circle Pad Pro accessory which adds the right thumb stick. I only mention this because if CTA managed to incorporate what the Circle Pad Pro brings to the table with its right circle pad and the 2 extra triggers it adds, they would have quite the monopoly on the handheld accessory market for the 3DS platform. And based on the quality of their products so far, I would like to see that happen.Hope this review helped.

5A much needed improvement to the 3DS
By UrameshiGU
(**The rating of this product is based purely on the fully functional, without fault CTA Digital - Deluxe Power Grip for the Nintendo 3DS, and is unrelated to communications and/or "dealings" with the purveyor of this product through Amazon**)Although I don't typically write reviews of any sort, I feel it necessary for this circumstance. Now I don't know whether it's mostly people that have a negative experience with this product post on here, or whether a good majority of the Power Grips Amazon is shipping out are faulty. Regardless, I can affirm from my experience with this product how it is supposed to operate.First, I must say that based on reading the other reviews, I was nervous about ordering one. I almost expected to receive a faulty Power Grip, therefore having to request a replacement. Fortunately, for me at least, this was not the case.A topic I will immediately address is the common issues that other reviewers have mentioned. Before ordering this, based on other reviews, I believed both of these to be an overall design issue that would be present in any of these CTA Power Grips that are sent out. The first is the flashing of the 3DS' screen(s) during charging or any other time of use. After having used this grip for about a week, this issue as of yet has not occurred once for me under any circumstance. The second is the loose placement of the 3DS inside the grip. When placed into the grip, my 3DS fits snugly into the grip, with absolutely no room for shifting even the slightest amount of space. With this being said, I can confirm that neither of these issues should be present when one receives their grip, and one should request a replacement Power Grip should they occur. Since Amazon is typically reasonable about returns, I don't believe this should be an issue. From the perspective from a 23 year old male on how the grip feels, as another reviewer stated this feels quite a bit like an Xbox 360 controller, only wider to accommodate the 3DS. It's a very comfortable format: contoured placing for one's middle fingers where the secondary shoulder buttons would be, perfect curve on the back of the legs to provide grip and comfort, and grooves in the plastic of the legs for added grip while it rests on one's palms. All ports, switches, and slots are perfectly accessible as well with nothing being blocked. The "cheap-y feel" another reviewer mentioned I believe is due to the intentional light weight of the grip, as well as the noticeably lower tensile impact strength of the plastic used for the grip as opposed to the 3DS' plastic. Although the grip feels sturdy, it would crack or break sooner than the 3DS would if it's dropped, but for a ~$26 grip I believe that's to be expected (and essentially a non-issue if one isn't clumsy/careless). Also, unlike another reviewer, I feel the shoulder buttons to be more accessible and comfortable to use than ever. The grip provides both thickness and distance away from the buttons so that one doesn't have a "claw grip" on the 3DS. As an example, while playing Mario Kart 7 using the grip I have been able to use the "L" button for items instead of the "X" button, as it was uncomfortable for me to use the "L" button without the grip. One's index fingers are comfortably placed directly over the shoulder buttons, as opposed to the "groove" between the molding of the grip and the 3DS as another reviewer suggests (although it's a viable option for those who wish to use it in such a way). Thicker fingers also do not affect the use of the shoulder buttons; the only restriction on space being the back of the top portion of the 3DS itself, which is a limitation with or without the grip. In addition to the shoulder buttons, the directional pad is also more accessible now, being much more comfortable to use than without the grip from my experience.Delving into the topic of accessibility, the 3DS is inserted into the grip by tilting the upper portion into the grip first and then letting the bottom portion insert in for a snug fit. The 3DS is also taken out of the grip in the reverse manner, which is initiated by the press of a pinky finger-sized button located on the back of the grip. The button doesn't depress much at all, but it moves the hinge that holds the 3DS in place for easy removal, as it's supposed to. Also the grip, upon insertion, removal, or use of the 3DS, does not scratch or mark the 3DS by any means. The grip provides power to the 3DS through the use of two copper wires that protrude from the top of the grip into the two inserts surrounding the 3DS' adapter port. These two wires extend into the 3DS' inserts via a protruding switch (located below the copper wires in the insertion area of the grip), which is triggered upon insertion of the 3DS (and does not scratch the 3DS). The wires, though sufficient for the intended task, can be bent with relative ease. This being the case, one should handle insertion and removal of the 3DS with care. The stand on the back of the grip is also sturdy--loose enough to rotate with ease but firm enough to stay in place and/or hold a game.In relation to the power aspect of the grip, the grip itself takes around 6-6.5 hours to charge with full battery depletion (as I have tested and as it states in the specs received with the product). Add onto that a 3DS with a fully depleted battery, with the 3DS placed inside the grip, charging takes around 9-10 hours, which may be an issue for some people. This lengthy charging time can, however, be greatly lessened by charging the 3DS and Power grip separately via the use of both the USB cable and AC adapter. Although I have not been able to test the length of battery life the grip provides, I have played the 3DS unplugged with medium brightness and Wi-Fi on for around 2 hours, after which the grip was still providing power. The power provided by the Power Grip can be switched either on or off via the small switch on the top middle portion of the grip. The USB charging cable has also been quite a nifty bonus, giving me an even easier means by which to charge my 3DS, while the AC adapter is still a perfectly viable option.Although I essentially have no problems with the grip, I did have one brief problem that has only occurred once. When I received my Power Grip, naturally the first thing I wanted to do was charge it. At first I had the odd experience of using the AC charger that came with the 3DS and the Power Grip, with the 3DS attached, wouldn't charge. I then plugged the AC charger into my 3DS using the same outlet, and that gave no indication of charging either. I tried this with several different outlets with the same result, and then tried the USB cable that came with the Power Grip. When I plugged it into my MAC, it stated that the device was drawing too much power (and therefore would shut off the port), even with the 3DS unattached. I then plugged the AC adapter into the grip only, and it started charging. Afterward I added the 3DS into it with the grip's switch turned on and both started charging. Regardless of how I charge it now (with the USB cable or AC adapter, 3DS opened or closed, 3DS attached or detached), the problem has not reoccurred. In conclusion, I must note that due to other reviews one should be prepared to possibly send their grip in for a replacement should they receive a faulty one. However, overall this is a fantastic grip that truly improves the playability of the 3DS. It has actually become a much more enjoyable experience to play my 3DS now, and with the added power I generally never need to worry about my 3DS' power being too low. There are improvements that could be made (as another reviewer mentioned) such as the addition of the secondary shoulder buttons and the second circle pad that the Circle Pad Pro possesses (while maintaining asymmetry), but for the very few games that use these additions at the moment and for the price of this grip, this really isn't an issue (although I'd be more than happy to see an updated version with these additions). It's a purchase that I feel has truly solidified my investment in a 3DS and I encourage anyone that owns a 3DS to buy one.

4Better than you think...
By Terence Kiang
So I feel compelled to write a review of this product so as to counter balance the 3-star review left by the other guy. If you look at the other CTA products you can see that the company cares about what they make otherwise they wouldn't have someone actually responding to other people's comments.Anyways, I have to say that I have had the 3DS grip/charger for about a week now and I honestly believe it is an improvement over the 3DS alone. The Grip: Molded in the likeness of an xbox 360 controller it is actually slightly wider, but in no way does it make the "grip" uncomfortable to hold with both hands and thumbs hovering the face buttons. Accessing the headphone port is easy and works for right-angled input jacks. Accessing the wifi and volume slider is ok too, though the thickness of the molding prevents you from using the side of your finger to "flick" it. Accessing the L, R shoulder buttons is the worst thing about the grip. You really need to get your fingers between the molding to reach them. My fingers are kinda skinny so it's passable, but thicker fingers or even gloved would be challenging. The material is a very basic plastic and has very little weight. When I took it out of the packaging, I thought it felt "cheap". The grip itself has no "grip" like the xbox controller. There's no rubber and really no ridges for friction. The only weight really comes from the internal battery. The weight is not really an issue though because once you put the 3DS in it, the whole package feels fine, just don't hold the thing wearing knitted gloves or it might slip out of your grasp. The Power: Just like the packaging and the reviewer said-- only comes with a USB charger. No big deal because I have a 3DS charger and I'm glad there isn't an extra one lying around unused. The 3DS AC charger plugs right into the grip and fits snuggly. Once it's fully charged you can toggle the grip battery on/off with a little switch. The "on" position is like having the 3DS on the 3DS charging cradle plugged into the wall. The "off" position keeps the charge in the grip and then you're just using the 3DS's own battery to run the game. Conclusion:The product is well made and a 3-star review doesn't give it justice. I can't get over the "cheapy" feel, but I can understand the design decisions in making it that way. I just wish the design of the molding itself was better executed. Oh well, you can't have it all. That's why I'm giving it 4 stars.
