5Perhaps the best Etrian title to date-
By Christopher Barrett
Nice of Atlus to include the pre-purchase bonuses - but the art book was uninspiring.-->You do have the option to continue your demo file on the regular game.If you have played a game in this series, congratulations on discovering a wonderful, albeit niche series. There are a few new things. Most notably is the easy mode. I don't recommend it, part of my Etrian love comes from the punishing difficulty. That being said, even on the regular setting it's not as tough as the first three. The 3D is amazing, more so because it's so well integrated that I often forget it is 3D! The style of game is definitely geared towards a nice 3D style. Graphics aren't the best I've seen on 3DS, but they're very nice. The colors in the 'dungeons' is very nice.Battles are fast. This is old school, turn based combat. You can plan your attacks and be patient, but once you enter the commands, the action moves quickly. Battles can be tough but if you spend time grinding then you shouldn't get 'pwned' unless you run into a FOE. Usually that spells death unless you are well prepared. There are several other options such as the map mode. You can do what I do and let the computer draw the general map and then you draw the walls, secrets, doors, and other details. Or you can do it 100% down to the floor itself. Whichever way, it's still fun and reminds me of those old nes games like might and magic, shadowrun, wizardry, and others. Most of those games didn't have maps, so I used a lot of graph paper mapping those games by hand! Takes me way back. This is a clever blend of old school, turn based, first person video game rpg and of pen and paper rpgs. It's well worth purchasing. Especially since these games tend to get scarce later on and resell for higher than their release price. Also of note: Atlus has been releasing QR codes for additional quests and content. It's pretty cool that they are doing that. And there is a video tutorial on how to use the codes in the game. The QR codes get you a few little trinkets, but nothing crazy good. A few open up some quests later in the game. You can scan them once, and then the quest will be an option later without having to re-scan the QR code. Also, don't expect much from the pre-release extras. The art book is just a few pages, and isn't more than the first few pages of an instruction manual. There are a few renderings, some character bios, and a little comic page. It's about the same size as the case itself. The CD has several of the non-orchestrated tracks. (That is the tracks as recorded by the composer before they were orchestrated).Update:The game gets tougher. Exploration in the skyship is really quite fun. It's a similar setup to the dungeon exploration, yet it isn't. It's nice to be able to secure food to sell in town. Great way to make money. Sometimes it's tricky to navigate the airship with the obstacles and the FOEs. The subsequent 'worlds' get much cooler. The burst system is a great addition. Especially the Escape Burst that takes you from battle and to the dungeon entrance. Nice if you are getting whipped by a FOE.My only complaint is that you receive a crap ton of experience with each completed quest (update - it doesn't make a huge difference later on - it's the early quests that toss a ton of xp at you). I know this makes life easier and makes for less grinding, but it really also kind of lets me down when I struggled to beat a bunch of enemies to gain a level, then I return from finishing a quest and get another level basically. It's not quite that bad, but I think it is one of those things that the developer inserted because folks were complaining. And that's on Normal, not Casual mode. Also, you can apparently start a *New Game after beating the game. There is a locked out harder difficulty setting that I think you can play on a harder setting than Normal. It's just as fun as the older titles, but with more exploration thanks to the skyship and multiple labyrinths and caves instead of the one big dungeon as in the first two titles. And for the record, those kangaroo things are annoying! But launch carrots and they get all "nom".Oh, one other beef, I wish they would have had character drawings come up when you talk to people at the Peacock place. Instead of just selecting a person (like Grizzled Explorer or Love Struck Adventurer). Would have been fun to have that one extra little touch of interaction.Pros:+ Decent challenge+ Amazing soundtrack+ Fast battles+ Lots of options (including Casual setting)+ Great classes+ Great screen setup on main exploration screen and in battle+ Access to enemy info in battle (once you've beaten at least one of that type)+ Good map making interaction+ Overworld exploration and multiple dungeon types for varietyCons:- Just one save file (come on guys!)- Wanted more color palettes for PCs (just two)- Pretty short and lackluster art book for the pre-purchaseUpdate:You do get to have some grinding time after you kill Blood Bear and reach the 3rd level of the Lush Forest (name? The first multi floor dungeon). So from level 12 - 18 or so you will be grinding. I imagine that the grinding will come in spurts. But at least you have the scavenging skills so that you can go into a dungeon, fight baddies, scavenge, and then return to town and sell the goods. Also, some QR quests don't open up until you can access the dungeons. You really don't know which dungeon will access which QR quest unless the QR has a description on the site or e-mail you got it from. Otherwise when you scan it, it says "You are unable to access this quest at this point in the game" or something to that effect.------------Update:Gets tougher, but mainly the bosses and some of the FOEs. Just leveling up helps. Subclass system interesting but doesn't really change game play too much.Almost done with the game and I must say I have enjoyed it immensely.

5Difficult, engaging, and beautiful
By Kathleen Angell
I have never played a previous Etrian Odyssey title, and my husband warned me that they can be difficult dungeon crawlers. My playthrough has been on normal so far, and I've probably clocked about 10-12 hours, my main party is level 15. This is a turn-based rpg with wondeful little animated monsters, whose animations change when they get close to death. The game will punish you on normal mode for not grinding and levelling up. Big bosses that roam the screen, unlike random encounters(although there is a meter in the bottom right to signal when an attack is impending), can destroy your party in a single hit if not properly levelled up. I'm still on the first map, still going through the BF3, and have to return to town to heal and restock after fighting one large boss. Be warned, expect to grind normal enemies and harvest lots of food to pay for your new gear and items. The QR codes have been useful, which are easy to find online. You can get free items, weapons, and dungeons. The game caters to creating different parties to switch between, but I've decided on five classes and only one core party as I don't think I have the patience nor time to grind three different guild parties. If streetpass is enabled, you can share and receive other people's playable parties, which may be great in a pinch if your lucky to get a high level guild ticket. Finally, I love skill trees, and the options don't disappoint. It's tough to choose, although I tend to stick with how I play. Defense and healing must not be ignored or your party will die (unless maybe you're playing on easy.) Some skills are also dependent upon certain types of weapons or shields being equipped. I've enjoyed the characters and minimal dialogue so far, and we'll see where this tale takes me!

5Trying not to compare too much to 3
By Terrapin Jess
First off, this game is absolutely awesome and I just got it yesterday and have only played about 2-3 hours worth. The first I've played in the series was Etrian 3: The Drowned City. I think that this 4th one is a tad easier on Normal than the others were at default. The 3D effects in the game are GREAT. The menu windows overlap each other like plates and stack outward in terms of the 3D and it looks great. If you liked 3, you'll like 4; it's very similar in terms of the flow of the game. There are some new things too as the other reviewer noted. For some reason, these games are extremely hard to put down. If you have even the slightest bit of OCD like I do, you will be in all of your glory drawing your maps and annotating things -- it is absolutely satisfying.I'm level 3 as of today after about 3 hours if that can gauge how quick the leveling is for anyone. (I invested some time [about 20-30 min] into my guild and their names and leveling)One other note: In the direction things are going in the digital movement, don't expect an instruction manual to come with the game. I thought it might have been a mistake (and maybe it was...?) HOWEVER, when you press the "HOME" button on the 3ds, you have one there in digital form to view so no big deal. It's useful for the new features like Burst etc.The extras (CD + Artbook) that come with the first issuing are pretty cool. If you collect Atlus games, you'll definitely be happy with them. Frankly, if you're casual or a huge fan, you're probably only going to look at it max 2 times anyway. Thank you Atlus for the love! Keep these extras coming!
